The ALFC Awards are presented each year to celebrate excellence and innovation among professionals in the lateral flow diagnostics industry. These prestigious awards aim to encourage, motivate, and inspire professionals to keep pushing the boundaries of the industry and making a significant impact.
The 2025 ALFC will be held Oct. 14–15 at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines in La Jolla, California. The award finalists will pitch on Oct. 14, and the awards will be presented on Oct. 15 at the closing reception and awards ceremony.
As part of this tradition, we’re spotlighting last year’s Innovation Award winner: Adam Melnyk, CEO of LFAnt. Adam and his team were recognized for their Compact platform, which integrates embedded magnetic sensors with traditional lateral flow strips. We spoke with him about the experience, his winning pitch, and what’s next for LFAnt.
Winning Moment
Melnyk recalls being inspired by previous Innovation Award pitches in 2021, and was proud to carry that momentum forward.
“Showcasing the Compact and sharing LFAnt’s vision for digitizing lateral flow diagnostics on stage at ALFC 2024 was one of the highlights of my year, and for LFAnt as a company,” he says. “[Being named a winner] was hugely validating, and it put into perspective the years of research, development, and collaboration that LFAnt has dedicated to advancing lateral flow technology.”
For his winning presentation, Melnyk emphasized innovation without sacrificing scalability. He focused on emphasizing how LFAnt’s embedded magnetic sensors seamlessly integrate with the tried and true paper strips that make lateral flow simple, scalable, and cost-effective.
By combining technical rigor with reassurance about manufacturing compatibility, he captured the audience’s attention and underscored LFAnt’s philosophy: innovation that can scale.
“At LFAnt,” he says, “we strive for innovation that is transformative yet familiar.”
Advice for Applicants
Melnyk encourages this year’s applicants to tell a story.
“Frame your innovation with a narrative arc and start with a hook. Just like any other pitch, conveying your innovation to the audience in the context of a relatable pain point or broader unmet need helps them appreciate the more technical aspects.”
He also advises checking in with the A/V team early to avoid last-minute slide issues—a practical pro tip from the stage that can benefit any presenter.
Looking Ahead
“LFAnt’s win attracted attention from industry leaders about emerging markets and applications for our technology we hadn’t previously considered,” says Melnyk.
The recognition sparked new conversations with suppliers, manufacturers, and stakeholders that continue to influence the company’s platform development.
Looking to the future, LFAnt is leveraging partnerships and Canadian government support to expand applications of its technology. Some of LFAnt’s current projects include a collaboration with the National Research Council Canada on home-based testing for age-related diseases; and working with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency on a field-ready lateral flow test for avian influenza capable of identifying H5 and H7 subtypes.
“In the spirit of innovation, we encourage anyone with an interest in these projects or LFAnt’s lateral flow sensing technology to reach out.”
Awards at ALFC 2025
